Vision 2020

Vision 2020, Greensboro Montessori SchoolAt GMS, our greatest asset has always been our shared mission: to nurture creative, eager learners as they discover their full potential and become responsible, global citizens.  The classroom environment and materials, the sense of community and the culture of respect, choice and independence combine to create an experience where children feel satisfied and successful, at peace, and ready to engage in purposeful and focused.

Guided by our new ten-year strategic plan entitled “Vision 2020,” our objective for the future is simple and powerful – to provide an unsurpassed Montessori education in which our students are prepared to succeed, lead and make a difference in the world.  To accomplish this, the first phase of our Vision 2020 plan is structured around four strategic priorities:

    • Update our campus facilities
    • Create a school community that better represents the world’s diversity
    • Develop an unparalleled environmental education program coupled with meaningful opportunities for community service and involvement
    • Invest in our exceptional faculty and student enrichment programs

To achieve our Vision 2020 priorities, our Phase I goal is to raise $1.2 million over the next three years.  We invite you to become part of this visionary fundraising initiative.  Together, we will continue to provide an unsurpassed Montessori education, nurturing a love of learning and inspiring tomorrow’s global citizens for generations to come.

  • Our goal is 100% participation in the Vision 2020 campaign from our GMS families, faculty and staff.
    • Why is 100% participation so important?
      • High levels of participation clearly show the School leadership and surrounding community that parents are willing to invest in their children’s future and support the School’s mission.  It demonstrates to philanthropic foundations and corporations that the GMS community is strong, united and worthy of outside support. It’s about “doing the right thing for our children”
      • In many instances, it is a pre-requisite for an organization to have secured 100% participation from it’s internal constituents before applying for grant funding

  • Did you know that tuition does not cover the actual cost of a GMS education?
    • Tuition provides approximately 95% of the cost of each child’s education.
    • GMS strives to make tuition competitive but also affordable.  The Board of Trustees sets tuition fees to cover approximately 95% of the educational costs.  The gap is closed through gifts to the Annual Fund, our new Vision 2020 campaign and a small amount of interest income.
    • By keeping tuition increases just slightly above the inflation rate each year we hope to keep a Montessori education affordable for a broader range of students.
    • Only in the U.S. are the tax laws designed to encourage voluntary support of independent institutions like GMS.  No independent school or college tries to survive on tuition alone.  GMS is a 501c(3) non-profit so we can seek tax-exempt gifts.  Donations to the Vision 2020 Campaign or Annual Fund are tax deductible, while tuitions are not.

  • How does GMS make up the difference between tuition revenue and the annual expenses of the School?

    • Through gifts to the Annual Fund, and our new Vision 2020 campaign.

  • Vision 2020 is a three-year campaign.  How does that work?

    • Each GMS family is being asked to make a pledge to the Vision 2020 campaign by December 30, 2011, with the option of paying their pledge over a total of three years.  We hope that by offering a longer period of time with which to pay, families will dig deeper and work towards making a meaningful gift.

Each year as new families join GMS, they will be asked to make a gift to the Vision 2020 campaign.
