Every Friday, we have Middle School Careers in the morning from 9:00am-12:00pm. The three careers we work in are: Research & Development, Farm, and Restaurant; separated by tribe, Black Bear, Otter or Raccoon. The GMS curriculum is split into trimesters, careers switching every time. Each career covers different skills and techniques, so every time you move to a new one there are plenty more interesting skills to master.  The careers are also designed to simulate real-world work. This allows us to experience the successes and pit falls of the working environment. This includes, managing finances, inventory, and production, and marketing a business.

Once a week, the Middle School students work in several real world simulations that we call careers: Restaurant, Farm, and Research & Development.  During the year, students rotate through each career to gain perspective on several different job opportunities.   Each career utilizes different skills and techniques to challenge students to increase problem solving and critical thinking skills. This allows students to experience the different aspects of the working environment. Jobs performed by students include: managing finances, business marketing, environmental awareness, and commercial food production.

Research and Development

In Research and Development we figure out how to make a more sustainable community. We try to use only compostable and reusable materials to promote a sustainable and healthy community and work towards a more resource efficient environment. We meet in four different groups: Outreach, Marketing, Product Development & Labs, and Finance. In Outreach, we have been working to find and contact a sponsor willing to give us a sponsorship. In Outreach, we are working to evaluate and assess the corn-hole boards that we made this past Fall. In Marketing, we are working to create a cookbook for all of the recipes we have used for restaurant. We are working to create and sketch a logo for our restaurant title, Maria's Cafe. We are trying to make a business on tea, growing it and selling it, experimenting with bermuda grass, in Product and Development & Labs. For the bermuda grass experiment we are trying to see what we can use to kill it without affecting the environment in a negative way. The Finance committee has been working to gather information on the the expenses and IOUs.

Farm

In late Fall and Winter, we don't do much in the garden. Our main focuses are on prepping certain foods, typically dessert or a side item, and making the drinks. One of the few things that was still growing was flowers. Picking the flowers is a weekly routine as far as decorations go.

The goals for our gardens in the Spring are

Restaurant

In restaurant, students learn how to properly work in a kitchen. From knife techniques to a complex, four course meal for fifty, Deirdre Kearney and Matt Spencer, the restaurant supervisors, keep up the culinary skills. We have middle school restaurant every Friday at 12:00pm. The tribe currently in the kitchen starts working around 9:00am, learning everything from how to properly chop an apple to managing and keeping up with a restaurant. So far this year, we have made several different types of soups, stews, and pastas. Also, we have had many varieties of salads and teas. We always have some type of delicious dessert of either mousse, cookies and sometimes even hot chocolate. Middle School Restaurant isn't always a success but we learn from our mistakes.
