Our Volunteers

All of us at The Greensboro Montessori School are very, very grateful for the support we receive from those in our community. We see, time and again, the volunteers who help our faculty and students both in and out of the classroom, and make GMS a community in which people come together for the betterment of their children.

There are several ways this School ensures that our parents, children, faculty and staff feel they are a part of a strong community of learners. It begins each year with Fall Festival and ends with our graduation ceremonies. All of our events are valuable for many reasons, none the least of which is they provide a way for children, parents, faculty, staff, and others in our GMS community to get to know each other, reconnect friendships, and start and end the school year on positive notes.

Certain events, such as the Spiral Dance and the Middle School Market Place, center on the children themselves and have become annual traditions. Other events bring more of the School community together, such as concerts, the Fall Festival, International Festival, and Grand Parents and Special Friends Day, all of which are always well attended and they provide proof to all of us the strength of our school community. To raise money for the 2006-2007 Annual Fund Campaign, we held an All School Prom. The event was a success due to the support we received from the GMS community and others within the Greensboro business community, in addition to the generous time given by our parents and school volunteers, as well as members of our Board of Trustees. A grand time was had by all who attended.

Field trips are an integral part of our overall curriculum. Over the years, we have found that trips away from school are an effective way for us to ensure that our students learn how to apply knowledge outside of the classroom environments. Field trips are effective in large part due to the volunteer parents who attend them, and each year we see and hear the appreciation of the teachers for the efforts of the volunteer parents. It is hard to imagine how we could serve this special need of the students from Primary through Upper Elementary without our parent volunteers.

The Moving Up and Graduation ceremonies are the two events that are very dear to my heart and are truly the culminating events of every school year. At graduation, not only do we see the results of our labors on behalf of our graduating students, we get to see in the eyes of the adults who attend events, the glow of pride and their appreciation of a job well done by our collective faculty members.

Please know that at The Greensboro Montessori School, your presence, your volunteering, your time, energy, and resources are gratefully appreciated, especially by the children we serve. As we head into the 2007-2008 school year, we look forward to more opportunities to come together for our children and our School.

Sincerely yours,
Frank Brainard

Head of School

Getting Involved with the PTC

In 2006-2007, the PTC sponsored visiting artists and musicians, hosted the annual Fall Festival, offered two book fairs, provided Montessori information for parents, coordinated teacher appreciation events, and hosted the truly amazing International Festival!

So far in the 2007-2008 school year, the PTC has been very active.  Fall Festival was a day of fun in the sun for our community – we had a great turnout!  The PTC was happy to sponsor the Native American Dance Performances in late October, as well as helping to bring Earth Mama to perform at the Thomas Berry birthday celebration.  In addition, an annual magazine subscription of “Tomorrow’s Child” has been provided to all Infant, Toddler, Primary and Lower El families, courtesy of the PTC.  Five issues will be sent home throughout the school year.

Volunteers are always needed!  Please help make a difference at GMS.  Volunteer opportunities are varied and plentiful!  Please contact Kerry Meyers, the GMS Volunteer Coordinator, if you would like to get more involved.  Thank you!
